    The energy policy in Uruguay was approved by the Executive Power in 2008 and it was agreed with all political parties with parliamentary representation in 2010. Uruguay has a state policy in the energy area and has several tax benefits.

    Mechanisms for the promotion of solar energy in Uruguay related to the Law No. 16.906 "Investment Promotion Law".

    The objective is the diversification of the energy matrix, both from sources and suppliers, seeking to reduce costs, reduce dependence on oil and seeking to encourage the participation of national energy sources, in particular renewable energies. This process will promote the transfer of technology and the development of national capacities and will seek to minimize the environmental impact of the sector.

    • The Federal Administration of Public Revenues (AFIP) implemented the procedure of accreditation and / or early refund of the Value Added Tax (VAT) to companies that use renewable sources for the production of electricity.
    • The companies included in the Promotion Regime for the use of renewable energy sources may simultaneously apply the Accelerated Depreciation of the assets foreseen in their investments in the Income Tax.
    • The General Resolution 4101 of the AFIP published in the Official Gazette, specifies that the benefit reaches the VAT that would have been billed to those responsible for the tax for the purchase, manufacture, production or final importation of capital assets, new in all cases, or the execution of infrastructure works, as provided for in decree 531 of March 30, 2016. In those cases, the tax "will be credited against other taxes collected by this Federal Administration, or otherwise it will be returned under the conditions that in this respect they are established ", says the regulation.
